EVENT JUDGES REWARDED AT NAV-C0N 2011

Well, NAV-CON 2011 has come and gone for another year.  The intensity of the actual event was such that your NAV-CON Staff is still recovering.  It was just one of those days where multiple folks all need attention and assistance at the same time.  For parents with a lot of kids it's a normal situation, but for your NAV-CON Staff, all of whom are getting up in years, it's a challenge.  Right now, we don't feel like putting on NAV-CON again anytime soon so we're holding off on the decision to do it again next year.

As always, not everything went as perfectly smoothly as we would have liked, but there was one improvement we were able to do this year that we are really proud of.  NAV-CON is pretty small in attendence as game conventions go and is only for one day.  As we constantly tell ourselves, naval gaming is just a niche within a niche.  While we control our expenses as best we can, we just can't afford not to charge admission to everyone including our event judges.  It's something we regret because without events there would just be no NAV-CON.  So we have been beating our puny brains to think of some way to show our appreciation to our event judges and this year we finally came up with something half decent.

Our hosts, the Oak Creek Salvation Army Community Center, open their concession stand during NAV-CON and make a little extra providing beverages, snacks, and sandwiches, all for competitive and reasonable prices.  This year, NAV-CON rewarded its event judges with a certificate for a meal at the Salvation Army concession stand.  It may not be much, but if you go to the effort to put on an event for us, is helps get you throught the day, and we like to think it shows the respect NAV-CON has for it's judges. According to the comments we received, these meal certificates were welcomed and appreciated.  At this time, we can't commit, but if NAV-CON returns next year, we'll seriously consider continuing the meal certificate reward for event judges.

Before concluding this entry, a big-time acknowledgement has to go out to our first time ever NAV-CON War College presenter, Mr. Dale Ridder.  Mr. Ridder gave a presentation in the evening on what it takes to sink a ship in World War II and it was absolutely fascinating.  NAV-CON was able to provide a projector and screen for Mr. Ridder to show his Macbook charts and pictures detailing the results of his lifetime research of original reports and sources.  NAV-CON attendence drops off in the evening as many get back to their normal lives, but about half of those remaining, nine hard-core dedicated naval gamers, sat there hanging on every word from Mr. Ridder and stayed late when the presentation ran a little overtime.  There is truly a lot to be learned about naval warfare and getting this knowledge at NAV-CON makes the whole experience even more special.  Thanks again, Mr. Ridder.

One more thing!  There's always one more thing.  This year NAV-CON had to delete some pictures from it's website due to a lack of affordable storage space.  However, one of our generous attendees took quite a few pictures at NAV-CON 2011 and has kindly shared them with us.  Elsewhere on this website, the link to these pictures can be found, together with the link for the pictures of NAV-CON 2010.  They are all an excellent representation of the NAV-CON experience.  Please check them out.

That's it for now.  Until next year, we'll leave the 2011 info on the website for informational purposes.

Name

Description

The Prussians (allied with Italy) having already decisively defeated the Austrians at Koniggratz on July 3, 1866, the transfer of Venice from Austria to Italy was already virtually guaranteed.  But the Italians themselves having been repeatedly trounced by the Austrians on land in this war, ordered out their navy to win at least one battle to preserve Italian honor.  Italy had a spanking brand new ironclad fleet, on paper at least second only to France in the Mediterranean, and they were eager to try it out on the Austrians.  The result was the first ironclad battle in European history, with more than twenty major ships involved, and the largest naval battle in European waters between Navarino and World War One.  It was also one of the most studied naval battles in history, influencing ship design and tactical doctrine for a generation afterward.

Flak goes up and what comes down will depend on the skill of the pilots on both sides! The scenario is a small sub-set of the entire battle as aircraft engage over one of the Jap carriers. Scrambling Hansa-Brandenburg seaplanes are showing up in ones and twos, but will they be able to stop the attack? (secret objectives and hidden vulnerabilities will add to the uncertainty of the outcome)"
Note: this game has been run before at Nav-Con, but with Hostile Aircraft rules. Fires in the Sky (and Savage Skies E-II) use a new card-based movement system that plays in about half the time of a comparable H. A. scenario, and takes only a few moves to learn the basics.
